there must be something wrong with me. almost everyone seems to love
a monster calls, so i really looked forward to read it. and then, there was dissapointment of sorts. dont get me wrong, i liked this book, but i wouldn't fall head over heels in love with it. i guess it just didn't speak to me like it did to others. i don't know why, maybe it was because of the narrative voice.
i knew what to expect: not a classic nightmarish scary story, but a deep tale about the nightmares of real life - anger, loss, grief. and just for the record, i did cry, or rather got teary-eyed. twice. that's all.
best part of the book was the first tale the monster told. the tales did it for me, awesome little parables. it's the stuff hayao miyazaki would make a beautiful anime of :)
all in all i can say,
a monster calls is a good book. the idea by itself is great, the writing is excellent, the illustrations terrifyingly terrific. still this wasn't my kind of book.
